AUTISM: Autism Education and Support Services hosts classes at the Center for Autism Education, 105 Crossings Industrial Court in O'Fallon. Classes include Understanding Autism, 6-8 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month, and Strategies for Challenging Behaviors, 6-8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. Information includes coping with labor, relaxation techniques, breathing methods and pain management options. It is recommended that these classes be started early in the third trimester. BREAST-FEEDING: SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, 100 Medical Plaza in Lake Saint Louis, offers breast-feeding classes for women who are planning to breast-feed and for those who have not yet decided. It is designed for mothers, fathers, grandparents and support persons and includes information on how the breast makes milk, how to establish a good milk supply, avoiding sore nipples and nurturing the breast-feeding family. AMERICAN RED CROSS FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING: The American Red Cross offers CPR and first aid classes at its St. Charles County Service Center, 224 Mid Rivers Center in St. Peters. Participants must pay in advance; no walk-ins accepted. Classes are scheduled as follows: A Babysitter's Training Class will be from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 9. This course includes training in safety, basic child care, safe play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. Students must be at least 11 years of age and bring a sack lunch to class. The class costs $42. A CPR/AED Training - Adult and Child plus CPR Training-Infant class will be from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 12 for part one and 6-9:30 p.m. Aug. 13 for part two (participants must attend both days to receive certification) or 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 23. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. Students will receive a CPR/AED-Adult and Child plus CPR-Infant certificate valid for one year. The class costs $52. A First Aid Component Training class will be from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 14 and Aug. 19. This class is designed for people with CPR certification and trains lay responders to recognize and respond to an emergency and give care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences to injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. Participants must present a current, within one year, CPR-Adult, CPR/AED-Adult, CPR-Adult, Infant, and Child or CPR/AED-Adult & Child PLUS CPR/Infant certificate to be eligible for this course. The class costs $31. A CPR/AED Adult Training class will be from 6-10:30 p.m. Aug. 18. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in people 8 and older. Students will learn to care for conscious and unconscious choking victims, perform CPR and use an AED on a victim of sudden cardiac arrest and receive a CPR/AED-Adult certificate valid for one year. The class costs $42. A Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Training (Adult) class will be from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 28. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults (people 8 and older) by providing care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. If a student only needs CPR/AED-Adult training, they may register for the first 4.5 hours of the course for $42. If a student only needs First Aid Component training, they may register for the last 2 hours of the course for $31. The entire class costs $53. GRIEF SUPPORT EDUCATION: Baue Funeral Homes offers grief support education classes at the Baue Family and Community Center at 608 Jefferson St. in St. Charles. The program will include instruction and hands-on practice in infant, child and adult CPR and first aid for choking and is taught by St. Louis Children's Hospital instructors trained by the American Heart Association. EVENT IRONMAN VISIT: Ironman triathlete and dialysis patient Shad Ireland will visit with patients at Fresenius Medical Care St. Charles Dialysis, 335 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters, on Aug. 8. Ireland receives dialysis every other day for five hours, and still trains for Ironman-distance triathlons. He hopes to inspire other patients to live healthier lives. SURVIVOR NIGHT AT THE BALLPARK: The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital will sponsor free tickets to cancer survivors and their family members for the 6:05 p.m. Aug. 17 Rascals game at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, 900 T.R. Hughes Blvd. in O'Fallon. The event includes free tickets to the game, cancer survivor recognition, auction items, a raffle, team autographs and more. The event will offer mammograms for women age 40 and over who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. The fee will be billed to the patient, the patient's insurance company or Medicare.
