Classes

HEART HEALTH: The St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment offers heart health classes for all ages. The classes are free and taught by registered nurse educators. For more information, call 636-949-7400, ext. 4244.

ARTHRITIS AQUATICS: The O'Fallon Family YMCA, 3451 Pheasant Meadows Drive, and St. Charles Family YMCA, 3900 Ehlmann Road, offer an Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program for the relief of arthritis pain and stiffness. Participants do not need to know how to swim for this program. Classes include Understanding Autism, 6-8 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month, and Strategies for Challenging Behaviors, 6-8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. These classes are designed for parents, grandparents, baby sitters, friends or other family members who want to learn more about autism. Cost is $30 per class. To register, call 636-978-4951.

DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT: SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, 100 Medical Plaza in Lake Saint Louis, offers diabetes self-management training classes. These classes are available with doctor's orders only. For more information call Doreen at 636-625-5447.

CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION: SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, 100 Medical Plaza in Lake Saint Louis, offers childbirth preparation classes to assist women and their partners to prepare for the birth of their baby. Information includes coping with labor, relaxation techniques, breathing methods and pain management options. It is recommended that these classes be started early in the third trimester. BREAST-FEEDING: SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, 100 Medical Plaza in Lake Saint Louis, offers breast-feeding classes for women who are planning to breast-feed and for those who have not yet decided. It is designed for mothers, fathers, grandparents and support persons and includes information on how the breast makes milk, how to establish a good milk supply, avoiding sore nipples and nurturing the breast-feeding family. AMERICAN RED CROSS FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING: The American Red Cross offers CPR and first aid classes at its St. Charles County Service Center, 224 Mid Rivers Center in St. Peters. Participants must pay in advance; no walk-ins accepted. To register for a class, call the American Red Cross at 636-397-1074 or visit www.redcrossstl.org and register online in the "Take a Class" section. Classes are scheduled as follows:

A Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Training (Adult) class will be from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 26 and June 30. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults (people older than 8) by providing care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. If a student only needs CPR/AED-Adult training, he or she may register for the first 4.5 hours of the course for $40. If a student only needs First Aid Component training, he or she may register for the last 2 hours of the course for $29. The entire class costs $51.

A Babysitter's Training Class will be from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 28. This course includes training in safety, basic child care, safe play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. Students must be at least 11 years old and bring a sack lunch to class. The class costs $42.

Membership drive

CANCER EDUCATION MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: The St. Charles County Cancer Coalition seeks volunteers to help educate the residents of St. Charles County on early detection, prevention and treatment of cancer.
