Young people take action for Crider Health Center
In October, Crider formed a junior board of directors to plan fundraisers and other events for the organization, which provides mental, dental and primary health care services in St. Charles, Warren, Lincoln and Franklin counties. It was the first time Crider had reached out to young professionals looking for volunteer opportunities."Young professionals have more money in their pockets, but they want to be active in their community instead of just writing a check," said Kathleen Fuller, the Crider mental health specialist that proposed the idea. "They are enthusiastic about planning things and getting involved. Even with their tight schedules, they want to give back to the community," Fuller said. Bridget Evers, 26, is one of 13 junior board members. Evers is a school liaison for Preferred Family Healthcare. "I think people our age are pulled in different directions - finishing school, starting a career, dating, marriage, finding who we are. We get caught up in ourselves and don't think about other people," Evers said. By building relationships with young people, the hope is that they will continue being involved with Crider throughout their lives, Evers said. The board meets at 5 p.m. the third Wednesday of every month at the Crider headquarters, located at 1032 Crosswinds Court in Wentzville. To find out how to join the junior board, call Fuller at 636-357-7365. The board's first fundraiser will be an outdoor luau at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 around the pool at the Bogey Hills Country Club in St. Charles. The event will include Polynesian dancers, food, drinks and music. Admission will cost $25 per person. For more information about the luau, call 636-332-8327. Future junior board events will include a fall hoedown and a Valentine's Day 1980s prom dance. |
