The Academy of the Sacred Heart gymnasium is no place to park cars, but its size makes it perfect for a "Huge Garage Sale."

The Catholic school will host the sale from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. June 21 in its gymnasium, located at 619 N. Second St. in St. Charles.

The school has operated similar "garage sales" to raise money for its own needs, but this event will be a fundraiser for Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service, a charity that helps low-income people in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties.Miriam Mahan, executive director of the Care Service, said the Huge Garage Sale will be an opportunity for bargain shoppers looking for household items, electronics, toys and baby supplies.

Jimmy Pool, the event co-chairman, said 100 percent of the money collected will go to the Care Service.

Pool, a Care Service board member, said the Huge Garage Sale will help pay for daily operations, with 90 percent of the money going into the charity's general fund and 10 percent going into an interest-bearing endowment. The garage sale is separate from the organization's capital campaign to purchase a new headquarters, he said.

The Care Service has about five pickup trucks full of donated sale items, but it needs much more to fill the gymnasium, Pool said.

"We're collecting furniture, appliances, clothing, antiques, anything you would put in your own garage sale," Pool said. "All we ask is that it be in working order."

Pool asked the public to drop off donated items at the Academy of the Sacred Heart gymnasium between 6 and 9 p.m. June 16-20.
