Blood drive

BLOOD DRIVE: The Lake Saint Louis Police Department and American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive from 3-7 p.m. June 12 at Lake Saint Louis Civic Center, 200 Civic Center Drive. All donors must be in good health and should eat before making a donation. In addition, all donors must present photo identification. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are requested. celebrationCANCER SURVIVORS CELEBRATION: The H.W. Koenig Cancer Center at SSM St. Joseph Medical Park and Missouri Cancer Care will host the seventh annual Cancer Survivors Celebration from 5:30-7:30 p.m. June 18 at St. Peter Parish Center, 324 S. Classes

HEART HEALTH: The St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment offers heart health classes for all ages. The classes are free and taught by registered nurse educators. For more information, call 636-949-7400, ext. 4244.

ARTHRITIS AQUATICS: The O'Fallon Family YMCA, 3451 Pheasant Meadows Drive, and St. Charles Family YMCA, 3900 Ehlmann Road, offer an Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program for the relief of arthritis pain and stiffness. AUTISM: Autism Education and Support Services hosts classes at the Center for Autism Education, 105 Crossings Industrial Court in O'Fallon. Classes include Understanding Autism, 6-8 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month, and Strategies for Challenging Behaviors, 6-8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. These classes are designed for parents, grandparents, baby sitters, friends or other family members who want to learn more about autism. Cost is $30 per class. To register, call 636-978-4951.

CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION: SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, 100 Medical Plaza in Lake Saint Louis, offers childbirth preparation classes to assist women and their partners to prepare for the birth of their baby. Information includes coping with labor, relaxation techniques, breathing methods and pain management options. It is recommended that these classes be started early in the third trimester. BREAST-FEEDING: SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, 100 Medical Plaza in Lake Saint Louis, offers breast-feeding classes for women who are planning to breast feed and for those who have not yet decided. It is designed for mothers, fathers, grandparents and support persons and includes information on how the breast makes milk, how to establish a good milk supply, avoiding sore nipples and nurturing the breast-feeding family. AMERICAN RED CROSS FIRST AID AND CPR TRAINING: The American Red Cross offers CPR and first aid classes at its St. Charles County Service Center, 224 Mid Rivers Center in St. Peters. Participants must pay in advance; no walk-ins accepted. To register for a class, call the American Red Cross at 636-397-1074 or visit www.redcrossstl.org and register online in the "Take a Class" section. Classes are scheduled as follows:

A First Aid Component Training class will be from 6-8:30 p.m. June 12. This class is designed for people with CPR certification and trains lay responders to recognize and respond to an emergency and give care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences to injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. Participants must present a current, within one year, CPR-Adult, CPR/AED-Adult, CPR-Adult, Infant, and Child or CPR/AED-Adult&Child PLUS CPR/Infant certificate to be eligible for this course. The class costs $29.

A Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Training (Adult) class will be from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 14, 26 and 30. This course trains lay responders to recognize and respond to emergency situations and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults (people older than 8 years of age) by providing care to help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. If a student only needs CPR/AED-Adult training, he or she may register for the first 4.5 hours of the course for $40. If a student only needs First Aid Component training, he or she may register for the last 2 hours of the course for $29. The entire class costs $51.

A Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor course will be from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. June 16 for part one; 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. June 18 for part two; and 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. June 20 for part three. Students must attend all three days to receive certification. This comprehensive course provides the skills to teach individuals how to provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses, perform CPR on adults, infants and children and how to use an AED on victims of sudden cardiac arrest (adults and children only). Includes the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course, which prepares instructor candidates to identify and respond to individual learning needs, assess participant progress and provide appropriate feedback, identify appropriate teaching methods and facilitation skills. The class costs $225. Participants must be at least 16 years of age, pass the pre-course session with a score of 80 percent or more on each section of the written exam and be competent with all of the following skills: CPR/AED-Adult and Child, CPR-Infant and First Aid.

A Babysitter's Training Class will be from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 28. This course includes training in safety, basic child care, safe play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. Students must be at least 11 years of age and bring a sack lunch to class. The class costs $42.

EQUIPMENT DRIVE: St. Louis HELP will sponsor an equipment donation drive from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. June 21 at Dierbergs, 79 Crossing/Salt Lick Road in St. Charles. St. Louis HELP accepts donations of nearly every type of assistive technology device. The items are refurbished or repaired, sanitized then loaned to individuals in need for as long as necessary.
