Veterans Memorial Walk A Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at O'Fallon Veterans Memorial Walk, 800 Belleau Creek Road.The keynote speaker for the event will be retired U.S. Army Maj. Robert L. Myers II. Jim Mueller will serve as master of ceremonies. O'Fallon City Councilman Mark Perkins, Ward 1, will deliver closing remarks. The ceremony is being organized by the O'Fallon Veterans Commission, and includes a wreath-laying and a rifle salute. Larry Williams will sing the national anthem, and the O'Fallon Community Concert Band will perform. O'Fallon City Hall will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Holiday delays trash collection Wentzville's trash collection schedule will change due to the Memorial Day holiday. During the week of May 26, trash will be picked up the day following residents' regularly scheduled day for pickup. For more information, call Wentzville City Hall at 636-327-5101. Hearing planned on county master plan The St. Charles County Council will host a hearing on the county's master plan at 7 p.m. June 9. The document outlines the plans for the county through 2020. The council requests the public view and offers comments on the document prior to the meeting. The document is viewable at www.sccmo.org/home. Health department offers child safety seats The St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment recently received funding to provide 90 low-income families with free child safety seats and instructions on how to use them. The grant was provided by the Community and Children's Resource Board of St. Charles County as well as the license plate fund. To qualify, a family's income cannot exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty level. According to the U.S. State Department, the federal poverty level for 2008 is $22,200 for a family of four. Public forum to address proposed trails in O'Fallon A public forum and open house to address proposed biking and walking trails in O'Fallon will be from 5-7 p.m. June 11 at the Renaud Spirit Center, 2650 Tri Sports Circle in O'Fallon. O'Fallon city staff and planning team members including representatives from Trailnet, James Pona and Associates and the Southwestern Illinois Resource Conservation and Development office will be available. They will discuss the bikeable/walkable communities planning process and options for the community. Some goals for the trails would be to connect key destinations such as schools, shopping areas, parks, other trail systems and employment centers. Residents may ask questions and comment during the breakout portion of the forum. There will be an additional period to submit public comments after the public forum and open house. Social Justice Alliance plans awards dinner The St. Charles County Social Justice Alliance has scheduled its annual awards dinner for 6:30 p.m. June 12 at Stegton Regency Banquet Center, 150 Wall St. in St. Charles. The alliance's board has announced the winner of the 2008 award is Michael Kuelker, an associate professor at St. Charles Community College and originator of the Democracy Days event that has taken place each of the past several years. Students Ben Chambers and Annika Erdman will make brief presentations explaining how and why justice has become important to them. Kuelker will respond to them in his acceptance remarks. The public is invited to the event, which will include a drawing for attendance prizes donated by local merchants. Cost of the dinner is $30 for individuals ($20 for students) or $250 for a table of 10. Ticket requests should be submitted by June 4.
