St. Charles wastewater

facility wins awards

St. Charles' wastewater treatment facility has won the 2008 George W. Burke Safety Award and the Missouri River plant has won the Small Plant of the Year.

Facility manager Kendall Coleman was notified by the Missouri Water Environment Association (MWEA) and accepted the awards March 31. Environmental Management Corp. (EMC) provides management, operation and maintenance expertise for the day-to-day operation of the city's wastewater treatment facilities and sewage lift stations.

The Burke Safety Award acknowledges an outstanding safety program at a wastewater treatment facility. The Burke Award is presented annually by MWEA to a single Missouri municipal or industrial wastewater facility for promoting an active and effective safety program. The St. Charles facility also received this award in 1996.

The wastewater treatment system serves the residential, commercial and industrial users of the city's sewer system. The facilities provide wastewater treatment for 91,000 people. EMC has operated and maintained St. Charles' wastewater treatment facilities since 1984.

EMC's staff at the St. Charles facilities have a combined total of 325 years of experience within the wastewater industry. Nine of the 15 staff personnel have Class A certifications, the highest level required by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
